Concluding remarks
Europe-wide discussions on the future of Europe shape the main
tendencies for the EU’s development. These tendencies have always
been assessed, first and foremost, from the point of view of their
contribution to the deepening of the EU’s internal integration and its
further “federalization.” In this light, we may witness the most
consolidated and supranational EU in Europe’s history if the
recommendations of the conference are approved by the EU
institutions. The steps enshrined in the recommendations will
indisputably change the decision-making balance to the advantage of
supranational institutions, further limit the sovereign competences of
EU member states and bring the EU considerably closer to the historic
goal of a unified Europe.
It may happen that in response to their applications for EU
membership, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova will receive the status of
an EU membership candidate. To this end, these countries may face a
significantly changed EU across the negotiation table at accession talks
if the Future of Europe Conference recommendations are materialized.
